Battuta Rotazionale

Also known as: swing rotazionale, battuta basata sulla rotazione

Definition

Beginner tip

Drill the "belly button to the pitcher" cue. This means your belly button should fully face the pitcher at contact, driven entirely by hip rotation rather than shoulder turn. This means and practice this motion in isolation with a medicine ball before adding the bat.

Advanced note

Work with your SwingVantage data to measure the time between your peak hip rotation speed and peak bat speed. This means shortening this gap by improving the transfer efficiency from hips through hands will increase bat speed without any change in physical strength or hip rotation speed.

Example

Why it matters

How it shows up on video

On video, rotational hitting quality is assessed by the sequence of hip turn versus shoulder turn and the degree of spine tilt through contact. Common errors include the shoulders opening before or at the same time with the hips (upper-body dominance), the head and spine drifting forward toward the pitcher during the swing (linear drift that destabilises the rotational axis). The back foot rolling over flat rather than driving up on the toes and ball of the foot (indicating the lower body is not fully contributing to the rotation).

Common mistakes

  • Opening the front shoulder too early. This fires the upper body before the hips have completed their rotation and converts what should be rotational power into a weak arm-driven push
  • Drifting the weight forward during the swing rather than rotating around a stable spine axis. This shifts the contact point and reduces the efficiency of rotation-to-bat-speed conversion
  • Substituting arm extension for hip rotation when behind on a pitch, compensating with linear arm force rather than trusting the hip speed to deliver the barrel on time
  • Confusing an upright, non-rotating stance with a "quiet" approach. This means the lower body should fire explosively even when the upper body appears still, and stillness in the lower body is almost always a mechanical limitation, not a stylistic choice

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage measures hip rotation velocity separately from shoulder rotation velocity and computes the temporal gap between peak hip speed and peak shoulder speed. This means a large gap indicates proper rotational sequencing. A small or negative gap indicates simultaneous or upper-body-first firing. The system also tracks spine angle drift during the swing to quantify forward linear movement that compromises rotational efficiency.
