Hook

Definition

Beginner tip

If you are hooking, check your grip first: can you see four or more knuckles on your lead hand at address? If so, weaken the grip slightly by rotating both hands toward the target until you see two to three knuckles. This structural change reduces the hook without requiring a swing adjustment.

Advanced note

If your grip is neutral but you still hook under pressure, the cause is likely lower-body stall. Focus on rotating the lead hip aggressively through impact — the sensation of "clearing the hip" gives the hands room to release without over-rotating the face. A drill: hit short pitch shots focusing on keeping the lead hip rotating past the ball. If the hook disappears on partial swings, the stall pattern is the culprit.

Example

Why it matters

How it shows up on video

From a face-on camera angle, a hook often shows very active forearm rotation through impact. This means the club appears to rotate over quickly and the face closes aggressively. From down-the-line, a pronounced in-to-out delivery (club approaching steeply from inside) combined with a forearm roll through impact is the classic hook pattern. A strongly rotated lead-hand grip at address (multiple knuckles visible) is a reliable pre-swing indicator.

Common mistakes

  • Over-correcting from a slice by strengthening the grip too much. This means moving from a weak to an extremely strong grip can trade a slice for an uncontrollable hook.
  • Letting the lower body stall through impact. This means when the hips stop rotating, the hands race ahead and the face snaps shut. This turns a draw into a hook.
  • Trying to keep the face "open" as the fix — manipulating the face through impact is unreliable. Structural fixes (grip, path) produce more consistent results.
  • Confusing a hook with a pull — a pull is a straight shot to the left (square face, out-to-in path); a hook curves to the left. Identifying which you have determines the fix.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage can flag visual indicators of a hook pattern from video. This means especially an aggressive forearm rotation through impact and an in-to-out delivery direction. This means helping separate hook causes from pull causes when diagnosing a left miss.

Frequently asked questions
