Catena Cinetica

Also known as: catena cinematica, catena di energia, catena di trasferimento di forza

Definition

Tips by skill level

Beginner tip

Feel the chain by hitting foam balls with only hip-and-torso rotation, holding the arm still. You'll be surprised how much power the trunk generates without any arm contribution.

Advanced note

Maximize the kinetic chain by adding a slight pause at the trophy position on your serve (or at the top of your backswing) to fully load the legs and hips before the forward swing begins. The momentary pause builds elastic potential energy.

Example

Why it matters

Coaches see the kinetic chain as the way good technique adds power while sparing the arm extra work. Motion Lab estimates the order and timing of your hip, torso and arm peak speeds. This shows whether the chain fires in order. It does not measure power.

How it shows up on video

SwingVantage traces the sequential firing of body segments from ground up on each swing. A well-functioning kinetic chain shows clear lag between hip rotation and shoulder rotation, with the arm following the torso. An arm-dominant swing shows the shoulder and arm moving at the same time without a rotation lag, indicating the lower-body and core links are absent.

Common mistakes

  • Beginning the forward swing with the arm and shoulder together instead of leading with the hips, collapsing the chain into an arm-only motion
  • Taking a flat-footed stance that prevents leg drive from generating the ground reaction force that starts the chain
  • Rushing the shoulder rotation before the hips have completed their forward drive, short-circuiting the torso elastic energy
  • Swinging too hard with the arm to compensate for the missing chain power, producing muscular tension that further slows racquet speed

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

Motion Lab estimates whether your hips reach peak speed before your shoulders, which shows the order your chain fires in. It also estimates the angle between your hips and shoulders, which shows separation. Hips and shoulders turning together suggest an arm-dominant swing.

Across sports

Pickleball
Pickleball uses a compressed kinetic chain — smaller hip turn and shorter swing arc, but the sequence from legs to arm remains the same principle.
Padel
Padel shots off the back wall still benefit from a kinetic chain that begins with the legs — rushing the arm before the hips leads to weak redirections.

Frequently asked questions
