バレルとは、高い打球速度と最適な打球角度を同時に満たした打球のことで、長打になる可能性が最も高い、特定の組み合わせを指す。
打球分析における「バレル」という用語は、高い打球速度と最適な打球角度が同時に達成された特定の高品質ゾーンを指す。MLBの打球追跡データでは、バレルゾーンは98mphの打球速度における26〜30°の打球角度と定義され、打球速度がその基準値を超えて上昇するにつれて、条件を満たす打球角度の範囲は広がっていく。112mphのボールは、より幅広い打球角度の範囲でバレルとして認定される。生の速度が不完全な軌道を補ってくれるからだ。バレル率——バレルに分類された打球の割合——は、パワー生産を予測する最も強力な指標の一つとされている。

Think of "barreling the ball" as hitting the sweet spot on a rising or level barrel path. Before worrying about launch angle numbers, develop the habit of making centered contact — that is the first prerequisite for any barrel.
Track your barrel rate by pitch type, not just overall. Elite hitters barrel fastballs at high rates and off-speed pitches at lower rates — the gap between those rates reflects pitch-recognition ability as much as mechanics. Shrinking that gap requires off-speed timing and spin recognition work, not more mechanical repetitions on one pitch type.

How it shows up on video
A barrel cannot be identified from video alone. This means it requires a sensor or tracking system to measure exit velocity and launch angle at the same time. What video shows are the conditions that produce barrels. This means centered contact in the hitting zone, arms extending through the ball rather than around it. A balanced finish suggesting energy was transferred to the ball rather than dissipated by a collapse or early pull-off.
Common mistakes
- Comparing barrel rates across different measurement systems or applying MLB barrel thresholds to evaluate youth or high school hitters. The threshold must be calibrated to the population.
- Assuming barrels can only be pull-side fly balls. A hard-hit line drive up the middle at the correct exit velocity and launch angle qualifies as a barrel regardless of spray direction.
- Chasing the barrel metric by prioritizing launch angle over barrel contact. Deliberately swinging for a specific launch angle at the cost of contact quality usually produces worse barrel rates, not better ones.
- Treating a single barrel as evidence of a reliably good swing. Barrel rate as a percentage of all contact — tracked over many swings — is the meaningful number.
