Focus on solid barrel contact rather than swinging as hard as possible. A centered hit at slightly reduced effort produces more hard contact. This means and a higher hard-hit rate. This means than maximum-effort swings that catch the end of the bat or the handle.
Track your hard-hit rate by count. Many hitters post strong rates in favorable counts (1-0, 2-0) where they sit fastball. But rates drop in two-strike counts where pitch diversity forces them off their approach. Closing that gap is the sign of a more complete hitter.
Example
Why it matters
How it shows up on video
Hard-hit rate requires a sensor to measure. But video reveals the mechanics that drive it. This means whether the barrel stays in the hitting zone through the contact point, whether there is compression on the ball at contact (arms extending through rather than pulling off early), and whether the swing sequence produces a balanced finish. Swings that end with the hands pulling back toward the body or the head diving forward typically produce softer contact.
Common mistakes
- Comparing hard-hit rates across different levels or measurement devices. The 95 mph MLB threshold does not apply to younger or amateur hitters — use level-appropriate benchmarks.
- Treating a short-sample hard-hit rate as a stable number. Hard-hit rate stabilizes more quickly than batting average but still requires a meaningful sample (20+ balls in play) to be reliable.
- Assuming a high hard-hit rate on fastballs transfers to all pitch types. Some hitters hit fastballs hard but struggle on breaking balls — pitch recognition and off-speed timing mediate overall contact quality.
- Ignoring the connection between hard-hit rate and swing mechanics. Hard-hit rate is an outcome metric; it improves when barrel path, timing, and contact point improve, not by focusing on the number itself.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage identifies the mechanical patterns most predictive of hard contact. This means barrel staying on plane, contact in front of the body rather than jammed, hip-to-shoulder sequencing that keeps the barrel accelerating through the zone. These patterns are visible from video even without a sensor measuring actual exit velocity.
Frequently asked questions
