Definition

Beginner tip

Before each at-bat, decide on the one pitch type and zone you will look for first and commit to taking everything else until you have two strikes. This means this count-by-count discipline is the fastest way to build plate discipline habits before developing full pitch recognition ability.

Advanced note

Track your O-Swing% and Z-Contact% separately in your SwingVantage data and identify which is limiting your plate discipline outcomes. This means if O-Swing% is high, the fix is pitch recognition training. If Z-Contact% is low, the fix is mechanical swing quality on in-zone pitches, and conflating the two metrics produces the wrong training intervention.

Example

Why it matters

How it shows up on video

On video, plate discipline quality is evaluated by the proportion of pitches outside the zone that result in swings versus takes. The quality of contact on swings at pitches inside the zone. Common errors include chase swings where the body has clearly committed but the pitch location is outside the zone (a mechanical discipline problem), takes on pitches right down the middle (over-selective zone hunting), and contact swings on two-strike pitches outside the zone that result in foul tips rather than in-play contact (indicating the hitter is defending mechanically but not with a controlled swing).

Common mistakes

  • Chasing pitches that break out of the strike zone at the last moment. This means a discipline problem that is actually a pitch-recognition timing issue, not a lack of discipline intention
  • Expanding the zone in situations of urgency. This means runners in scoring position, late-inning situations. This means when the count should determine zone protection rather than the situation adding extra pressure to swing
  • Having good O-Swing% (out-of-zone chase rate) but poor Z-Contact% (in-zone contact rate). This indicates a passive approach that protects the zone but cannot capitalise on the good pitches offered
  • Relying on "gut feel" about strike zone edges rather than building a systematic mental map based on umpire tendencies, pitcher profiles, and personal tracking data

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage distinguishes between pitch-recognition failures (the hitter started the swing before the pitch was readable) and mechanical discipline failures (the hitter had information but could not physically check the swing). This distinction drives the training advice: pitch recognition training for the former, mechanical swing-check drills for the latter.
