コースマネジメント
コースマネジメントとは、どこを狙い、どのクラブを使い、リスクを最小化しながら自分の実力に対して効果的にスコアするために各ホールをどうプレーするかという、意思決定の戦略のことだ。
コースマネジメントとは、ゴルファーがコースを攻略するために使う戦略的な意思決定プロセスのことで、あらゆるショットで、どこを狙うか、何を打つか、どんなリスクを取るか、あるいは避けるかを選ぶことだ。良いコースマネジメントは、より良いスイングを必要としない。すでに持っているスイングをどう応用するかについて、より良い判断力を必要とするのだ。どのホールにおいても、典型的にはアグレッシブ(ピンを直接狙い、障害物に挑む)から、コンサバティブ(トラブルから離れて狙い、安全なルートを取る)まで、複数の有効な戦略が存在する。正しい戦略は、具体的な状況、選手の能力、そして各選択肢のリスクとリターンの計算次第だ。

For recreational golfers, this single change typically reduces approach-shot risk by 30–40% and produces more consistent short putts rather than long ones or chip-back situations from short-sided misses.
Before each tee shot, ask "if I hit my normal miss, where does it end up?" and adjust your aim. As a result, the miss lands in a playable position rather than in trouble. Build this miss-planning habit into your pre-shot routine for tee shots and approach shots. This means it typically produces a 1–3 stroke improvement per round without any change in swing quality.

How it shows up on video
Course management decisions are not visible in swing video, but their absence is visible in shot selection and outcomes. Video of on-course play (where club, target, and shot shape are all visible) can reveal course management patterns. This means reliably aiming at difficult pin positions, repeatedly taking on obstacles without consistent ability to carry them, or failing to account for miss tendency in aim direction. These observations provide useful context for scoring improvement beyond swing mechanics.
Common mistakes
- Attempting the same heroic shot that failed on the previous hole — the definition of repeating a bad decision is unchanged. If a shot required perfect execution and you are not at that level, the expected value is negative regardless of how good it would feel when it works.
- Ignoring your miss tendency when aiming — every golfer has a predominant miss direction. Aiming so that the miss lands in the safe area (rather than in trouble) is the single most cost-free scoring improvement available. Knowing your miss and building it into aim is pure course management.
- Playing to par rather than playing to your ability. This means recreational golfers often try to make birdie on a hole that their ability level means they should approach for a comfortable bogey. Playing to your actual ability level (which may mean three shots to reach a par 4 green) produces better scores than aggressive par-chasing.
- Not accounting for green-side trouble when planning approach shots — where you miss a green matters as much as where you aim. A pin tucked left with a bunker left is best approached from the right center of the green target. This leaves the miss to the fat right side. Thinking backward from the hole to the approach is a key course management skill.
