カウントアドバンテージとは、現在のボール・ストライクのカウントがどちら側に有利かを表し、それに応じて双方がどう調整すべきかを示す概念である。
0-2では投手はゾーンを広げ、仕留めるための布石として1球を使う最大の機会を得る。3-0ではストライクを取りに来るファストボールがほぼ自動的に来るため、打者は狙いを絞ることができる。この流れを管理することは投手にとって核となるスキルであり、仕留める前に1-2まで持っていき、打者が一つの球種に狙いを絞れないよう常に先手を取り続ける。安定してストライクを取りカウントをコントロールできる能力が、良い投手と傑出した投手を分ける。
Make first-pitch strikes your single highest priority. This means getting ahead 0-1 versus falling behind 1-0 shifts the leverage sharply in your favor for the rest of the at-bat.
On 0-2, throw your strikeout pitch just off the zone rather than far outside. This means a pitch that looks close enough to swing at but finishes inches outside generates chases without wasting the count on unpressured balls.

Hitter strike zone expansion is measurable on video. This means compare where hitters swing on 0-0 versus 2-0 counts to see how count shifts their zone coverage decisions. A pitcher who doesn't command strike-zone pitches well will reliably fall behind and face hitter-advantage counts.
Common mistakes
- Throwing balls on 0-2 that the hitter doesn't chase, wasting a count advantage by missing waste-pitch location far from the zone rather than just off it
- Throwing too many first-pitch balls, systematically putting the hitter in count-advantage territory from the start of at-bats
- Treating 3-1 as a mandatory fastball for strike, making the pitcher completely predictable in the most dangerous hitter count
- Hitters failing to differentiate between a pitcher-friendly count and a hitter-friendly count, using the same swing approach on 2-0 and 0-2
