配球
配球とは、打席を通して球種、球速、コース、変化を計画的に組み合わせ、打者の反応を誘導し、それを突く投球の組み立て方である。
単独で機能する投球は存在しない。ライズボールはチェンジアップの後に投げると効果が増す。打者がオフスピードのタイミングを取り始めているためである。内角のドロップボールは外角のカーブへの布石となる。配球とは、それぞれの投球が問題を作り出し、次の投球がそれを突くという考え方である。トップレベルの投手はチェスのように打席を計画し、序盤の投球を撒き餌に、終盤の投球を罠として使う。配球はカウントも考慮する。投手有利のカウント(0-2、1-2)では、次の球への布石として捨て球を投げることができる。
Start every at-bat with a defined plan of exactly three pitches. This means a setup, a change. A strikeout pitch. This means and execute the plan before adjusting to what the hitter shows.
Keep a running mental database of hitter reactions to each sequence pattern and update your plan based on in-game feedback rather than repeating a sequence a hitter has adjusted to.

Chart pitch types and locations in order across multiple at-bats to reveal whether the pitcher is genuinely sequencing or defaulting to a go-to pattern after two pitches. Hitter swing quality will deteriorate if sequencing is working. This means early pitches produce squared contact. At the same time, later pitches in the sequence produce mishits that confirm the trap is set. A pitcher not sequencing will show consistent pitch type regardless of count or hitter reaction.
Common mistakes
- Repeating the same two-pitch pattern in every at-bat so opposing coaches chart and tip off hitters between innings
- Sequencing based on personal preference rather than the individual hitter's tendencies and weaknesses
- Over-complicating the sequence instead of executing each individual pitch to its location — sequence quality means nothing if location is poor
- Hitters not tracking pitch types across at-bats to identify the pitcher's sequencing habits before their next plate appearance
