カーブボールとは、横方向のスピンをかけて投げるファストピッチの投球のことで、プレートに到達する際にボールが片側へ鋭く曲がり、打者のタイミングと目線を乱す。
ライズボールやドロップボールの垂直方向の変化とは異なり、カーブは水平方向に動く——右投げの投手は典型的には右打者から離れる方向に、あるいは左打者の内側へ投げる。スピンは、ウインドミルモーションの中でリリース時にグラブ側へ体を横切るように手首をスナップさせることで生み出される。その価値は、ボールを打者の予想される軌道から外し、目線を変えることで縦の変化球をセットアップすることにある。

How it shows up on video
Look for the pitcher's wrist rotating across the body toward the glove side just before the hip as the arm passes the release point, distinguishing it from a fastball with the same arm speed. The ball will appear to start on the hitter's plate-side before breaking sharply away. A right-handed hitter's front shoulder will often pull open early as they chase the lateral break.
Common mistakes
- Opening the hips too early, pulling the pitch and losing horizontal break
- Tipping the pitch by changing grip pressure or wrist angle before the arm circle begins
- Releasing too high on the arm circle, reducing lateral spin and producing a flat pitch
- Committing to the break too early as a hitter and rolling over on a pitch still on the corner
