Definition

Tips by skill level

Beginner tip

Think "bend and block" on half-volleys — drop your body down by bending the knees, not the back, and use a short, firm forward push to get the ball over the net.

Advanced note

Practice deliberate half-volley drills from mid-court to build the touch — once you can control them on purpose, you will be less rattled when they occur unexpectedly during points.

Example

Why it matters

Half-volleys reveal how well a player moves through the court. Motion Lab estimates your knee bend, but not your contact height; balls taken very low often trace back to a slow first step.

How it shows up on video

SwingVantage checks for a deep knee bend, a compact forward swing, and a lifting follow-through. On video, check that the racquet head gets below ball level right after the bounce and that the ball clears the net safely. Errors appear as the player reaching down with the arm without bending the knees (producing a weak scoop), or contacting the ball on the rise too far in front. This causes an uncontrolled deflection.

Common mistakes

  • Reaching for the ball with the arm instead of bending the knees, producing a weak, upward-scooping contact
  • Contacting the ball too far in front before it has finished rising, causing an hard-to-predict deflection off the strings
  • Using the same swing length as a full groundstroke, which is far too long for a ball at ankle height
  • Lingering in no-man's land repeatedly instead of committing to the net or recovering to the baseline to avoid the situation

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

Motion Lab estimates your knee bend and balance, but not your contact height. It does not see the bounce, count half-volleys, or track court position. If half-volleys keep happening, check on video whether court position, not technique, is the cause.

Frequently asked questions
