그린 리딩

그린 리딩은 퍼팅 표면의 경사, 결, 속도를 평가해 공이 시작 라인에서 홀까지 얼마나, 어느 방향으로 휘어질지 예측하는 것이다.
그린 리딩은 퍼팅 그린의 경사, 결, 속도를 해석해 공이 현재 위치에서 홀까지 굴러갈 경로를 예측하는 기술이다. 올바르게 읽고 올바르게 친 퍼트는 예측된 라인을 따른다. 라인을 잘못 읽은 채 잘 친 퍼트는 놓친다. 10~15피트보다 긴 퍼트에서는 그린 리딩이 아마도 지배적인 기술일 것이다 — 가장 메커니컬하게 완벽한 스트로크조차도 롱 레인지에서 라인이 1피트 이상 잘못 읽히면 효과가 없다.

Develop the habit of always checking the putt from the low side of the break. This means walk to the low side of the putt (the side the ball would roll toward if missed) and look back toward the hole from ground level. This means slope that is invisible from behind the ball is often very obvious from the low side.

How it shows up on video
Green reading itself is not directly observable in swing video. But the consequences of misreads are. This means putts that start on line but break more or less than expected indicate slope misread. Putts that start in the wrong direction indicate mechanical issues. From overhead or downhill camera angles during on-course play, slope is more clearly visible. AimPoint practitioners can be seen standing with feet spread and placing fingers in front of their face to calculate break — a recognizable technique from video.
Common mistakes
- Only reading the putt from directly behind the ball. This means looking at only one angle misses slope that is perpendicular to the line, and misses total slope information from the sides. Walk the putt from multiple angles when possible.
- Under-reading break on fast greens — slower green players tend to read minimal break and rely on a firm roll to overpower the slope. On fast greens, this produces dramatic misses because the ball follows the slope more on a slower, higher-arcing putt.
- Ignoring grain — in areas where Bermudagrass or bentgrass grain is significant (warm-weather climates), grain can overpower visible slope. A putt that visually appears to break left may actually break right if the grain is growing toward the right. Checking grain (shiny = with the grain, dull = into the grain) is essential on these surfaces.
- Changing your read after deciding — second-guessing the read while over the putt creates confusion and often produces an indecisive, uncommitted stroke. Once committed, commit fully to the line and let the result inform future reads.
