Verdedigingshouding (klaarstand)

Also known as: klaarstand, atletische houding, verdedigingsstand

Definition

Beginner tip

Practice taking a small two-foot hop every time you say "contact" during fielding drills. This means this trains the timing of the hop relative to the pitch without requiring a real pitcher or batter. This builds the automatic muscle pattern that appears in games.

Advanced note

Time your pre-pitch hop by counting from when the pitcher's front foot lands to when you take the hop. This means elite fielders time the hop to land with the pitch in the hitting zone, and adjusting the timing one pitch-cycle earlier or later changes whether you are dynamic or flat-footed at the critical contact moment.

Example

Why it matters

How it shows up on video

On video, ready position quality is evaluated at the moment of bat-ball contact. This means the fielder should be mid-hop or landing from the timing hop, weight on the balls of the feet, knees flexed, and body leaning slightly forward. Common errors include the fielder caught flat-footed mid-hop or skipping the timing hop entirely (visible as zero weight shift at the contact moment), an upright stance where the knees are locked rather than flexed (requiring a bend-and-load before any lateral movement). The glove arm held across the body rather than out front (limiting the range of glove-side first steps).

Common mistakes

  • Standing still through the pitch delivery without taking a timing hop. This leaves the fielder in a static weight-equal stance at contact. This means requiring a weight shift before any directional step can be taken
  • Taking the timing hop too early (as the pitcher releases the ball rather than when the bat makes contact). This means the fielder is landing and re-loading rather than mid-hop or freshly landed at the critical reaction moment
  • Locking the knees in the ready stance in an attempt to look "athletic" rather than adopting a true athletic position. This means unlocked knees are a requirement for explosive first-step movement, not a sign of mechanical looseness
  • Holding the glove arm tense and rigid rather than relaxed in the ready position. This transmits the tension through the shoulder and slows the reaction time on balls hit sharply to either side

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage captures the fielder's body position at the exact frame of bat-ball contact and measures knee flexion angle, weight distribution, and glove arm position against optimal ready-stance benchmarks. Fielders whose contact-moment position is outside the optimal window. This means too upright, flat-footed, or back-weighted. This means receive a ready-stance alert with the specific metric that is out of range.
