Connection
Also known as: gekoppelde swing, lichaam-arm-synchronisatie
For an immediate connection drill. This means hit chip shots with a glove tucked under your lead armpit and try to keep it from falling for the entire chip. This means this short-game version of the connection drill teaches the feel of arms-and-body moving together without the full demands of a complete swing.
To develop connection at full speed, practice with an "arm-connected" feel at 80% effort until the pattern is ingrained, then gradually increase speed. At the same time, monitoring whether the arm-body relationship is maintained. This means most disconnection happens when swing speed increases, and building connection at moderate speeds before adding effort produces more durable improvement.
Example
How it shows up on video
From a face-on camera angle, connection is visible as the lead arm staying close to or against the chest throughout the backswing and early downswing. A disconnected swing shows the lead arm lifting away from the chest in the downswing. This means a gap appearing between the arm and the torso. This means and the arms swinging outward rather than being driven by body rotation. From a down-the-line angle, disconnection often shows as the trail arm "flying" (the trail elbow lifting away from the body in the backswing) and the arms crossing outside the downswing plane.
Common mistakes
- Confusing connection with restriction — squeezing the arms against the chest throughout the swing creates tension and limits range of motion. Connection is about harmonious movement, not constant physical contact between arms and chest.
- Focusing on the trail arm connection rather than the lead arm. This means most connection drills emphasize the lead arm. But the trail arm's "flying elbow" in the backswing is an equally valid connection issue that contributes to over-the-top paths.
- Achieving connection only on the backswing but disconnecting in the downswing. This means many golfers can maintain connection in the backswing but immediately separate at the top when they initiate the downswing with the arms. The critical moment to be connected is in the early downswing.
- Assuming disconnection is always bad — some elite players (Jim Furyk, for example) have unorthodox arm movements that appear disconnected but are highly consistent. Addressing connection is most important when uneven results or over-the-top path is the presenting problem.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage observes connection patterns from face-on and down-the-line video by tracking the spatial relationship between the lead arm and the torso throughout the swing. The system can identify arm-body separation in the downswing. This means especially the trait "gap" between the arm and chest. This means and label these observations with confidence based on video quality and whether the body-arm relationship is visible throughout the swing.
