Een topped shot is wanneer de club boven de evenaar van de bal contact maakt — de bovenste helft raakt — zodat de bal met weinig hoogte of afstand naar voren scharrelt over de grond.
Een topped shot is een misslag waarbij de clubhead de bovenste helft (of in ernstige gevallen alleen de allerbovenste top) van de golfbal raakt. In tegenstelling tot een thin shot, waarbij de leading edge de evenaar raakt, betreft een topped shot een club die bij of boven de top van de bal beweegt, wat een rollende of stuiterende balvlucht oplevert die nauwelijks van de grond komt en een fractie van de beoogde afstand aflegt. De bal huppelt na een topped shot doorgaans over de grond, wat een kenmerkend 'rollend' resultaat creëert dat makkelijk te onderscheiden is van elke andere misslag.
Topped shots treden op wanneer de onderkant van de swingboog boven de bal ligt in plaats van eronder bij impact. Dit kan om verschillende redenen gebeuren: early extension (het lichaam dat uit zijn addresshouding omhoogkomt tijdens de downswing, wat het laagste punt van de swingboog optilt); het hoofd of de ogen voortijdig van de bal tillen, wat het hele lichaam laat oprijzen; een reverse pivot (gewicht dat op de voorste voet blijft in de backswing) dat een opwaartse boog door de impact heen produceert; of een te sterk verkorte armswing die de club in een positie brengt waarin hij alleen de top van de bal kan raken.
Topped shots met de driver komen bijzonder vaak voor bij beginners omdat de lage loft van de driver de gevolgen van een niet-centraal contact boven de evenaar overdrijft, en omdat de driver de langste club is, waardoor de boog het verst van de grond af staat. Getopte driverslagen vanaf een tee zijn vaak het gevolg van een tee die te hoog staat (wat een neerwaartse slag afdwingt in een bal die geveegd zou moeten worden) of van een balpositie die te ver naar achteren in de stand staat voor een bal op een tee.
For a quick topped-shot check. This means focus your eyes on the back of the ball (in particular the back-lower quadrant) and keep them there until after impact. This focus point naturally keeps the eyes and head from rising prematurely and helps maintain the swing arc through the impact zone.
Use an impact sticker on the clubface and check the contact location after shots. This means a topped shot leaves a mark on the very top of the face or no mark at all on the face (if only the top edge made contact). A series of marks progressively moving from center toward the top indicates a growing early extension problem that will eventually produce tops, and is easier to address before it becomes a severe pattern.

How it shows up on video
A topped shot produces a distinctive ground-level or near-ground-level trajectory that is immediately recognizable regardless of camera angle. In slow-motion video from face-on, the club can be seen contacting the top portion of the ball. From down-the-line, early extension — the body rising through impact — is the most common visible cause. The golfer often visibly "looks up" before impact. This is a symptom of early extension (the body rise causes the head to rise) rather than literally lifting only the head. At the same time, the body stays down.
Common mistakes
- Trying to "keep the head down" as the fix for topped shots. This means keeping the head down is a symptom-focused cue that rarely addresses the root cause. The head rises because the body rises (early extension), not on its own. Fixing the body rise is the real solution.
- Teeing the ball too high with the driver. This means a tee height where more than half the ball is above the clubface top creates a downward angle-of-attack necessity with the driver. This produces topped or thinly-hit driver shots. The equator of the ball should be near the top of the clubface at address.
- Playing the ball too far back in the stance for a driver. This means a driver ball played too far back in the stance creates a downward attack angle that catches the ball above the equator. Move the ball forward toward the lead heel.
- Thinking topped shots are always a swing problem. This means a topped shot from an unusual lie (downhill slope, ball above feet) may be entirely caused by the lie. Adjusting setup for slope (play the ball back on downhill lies) prevents lie-induced tops.
