Open stand
Also known as: open-stance-forehand, open positie
Een open stance positioneert beide voeten ruwweg parallel aan de baseline bij contact, wat de heupen krachtig door de bal laat draaien zonder een gewichtsoverdrachtsstap te vereisen.
By planting both feet parallel to the baseline and driving rotation from the hips and torso alone. Players can hit with pace and spin even when on the run — and recover back to the center of the court immediately after contact. On the forehand especially it relies on strong hip-shoulder separation and a pronounced shift from the back foot to the front. Crucially, good ones are not arm-only. They need the same hip and shoulder rotation a stepped-in position produces, generated without the step. It suits low, short balls poorly, where stepping in gives better forward momentum.
The weight shift here is often misunderstood. Without a stepping foot to transfer weight forward. The weight shift happens through a push-off from the back leg and a loading-and-releasing motion of the back hip. The back knee bends on the backswing to load the hip, then straightens explosively as the hips rotate forward — creating a linear weight shift that feeds into the rotational energy of the swing. Players who skip that loading motion produce a genuinely arm-dominant swing that lacks pace and spin despite looking rotational.
Recovery is the hidden advantage. Because neither foot is committed to a crossing step. The player can immediately push off in any direction after contact — left, right, or forward — without first having to unwind from a stepping motion. This is why forehands on the run are hit this way as a matter of course. The player arrives moving sideways, plants, swings, and keeps moving back toward the middle without losing momentum. Stepping across first requires reversing that motion before recovering, and the fraction of a second it costs matters enormously at speed.
Tips by skill level
To feel it hip-driven, shadow swing with your arms crossed over your chest and rotate fully — then add the racquet and try to match that same hip speed.
Add an aggressive shift from the back foot to the front by pushing off the back leg explosively. This adds linear momentum to the rotational power.
Example
Breed naar het deuce-zijstraat geduwd, plant ze beide voeten parallel aan de baseline, laadt de rechterheup, en draait een crosscourt-forehand — geen tijd om naar binnen te stappen maar volledige rotatie levert pace.
Why it matters
Modern tennis is played largely from this position. Motion Lab estimates how far your hips turn, which shows whether these shots stay hip-driven or slip into arm-only swings.
How it shows up on video
SwingVantage checks that the hips, not just the arm, are driving the rotation. On video, check that both feet are roughly parallel to the baseline at contact. An arm-dominant version shows minimal hip clearance, a flat swing path and a short or scooped follow-through.
Common mistakes
- Swinging with the arm alone instead of driving the rotation from the hips
- Using it on a ball slow enough to step into, which sacrifices power and depth
- Allowing the back knee to collapse inward instead of loading it properly, reducing hip-drive capacity
- Failing to recover immediately, since there is no stepping momentum to start the return movement
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
Motion Lab estimates how far your pelvis turns from the coiled position to the finish. This separates a hip-driven forehand from an arm swing struck from the same footing.

Is dit een slechte gewoonte voor beginners?
Niet inherent — veel coaches leren het vroeg omdat het natuurlijke rotationele beweging weerspiegelt. Het cruciale punt is leren heupen en schouders te drijven, niet alleen de arm.
