Think "catch the ball with the bat" rather than "hit the ball with the bat". This means your job is to absorb the pitch's energy, not to add your own.

Practice angle-specific bunting by placing targets at first-base line and third-base line locations and reliably directing the ball to each target using only bat angle adjustment, not push direction.

How it shows up on video

Watch the top hand position on the barrel. This means it should be near or above the label, not down at the grip. This means and the bat angle should be set before the ball arrives rather than after commitment. Poor bunters will show a pushing motion toward the ball rather than a catching/absorbing motion, producing hard bunt contact that travels too far. The bat angle relative to fair territory at the moment of contact directly predicts the direction the ball will travel.

Common mistakes

Pushing the bat at the ball rather than letting the ball come to the bat and absorbing its force to deaden the contact
Setting the bat angle too late. This means squaring and angling after the pitch is already halfway to the plate. This means giving the defense time to react and charge
Bunting balls out of the zone on pitch sequences that require zone discipline, especially rise balls above the zone that produce automatic pop-ups when bunted
Using a full grip with the bottom hand rather than sliding the top hand for control. This reduces the ability to angle and deaden the ball accurately
