Cổ Tay Dẫn (Lead Wrist)

Also known as: cổ tay trái (với người thuận tay phải), cổ tay tay trên

Definition

Beginner tip

Stop your swing at contact, or check it on video. A karate-chop position — flat, edge of the hand facing down — is a correct delivery. The back of the hand facing the sky means cupping, and lost compression.

Advanced note

Train flexion and extension with a purpose-built trainer, or with video plus a strip of tape on the face as an angle indicator. Being able to add or remove five degrees on demand gives you direct control over delivered loft, which compensates for a great deal else.

Example

How it shows up on video

From face on, the clearest view is at impact. This means bowed or flat shows the back of the hand and forearm in one continuous plane, with the shaft leaning forward. Cupped shows the back of the hand breaking upward, with the shaft vertical or leaning back, adding loft. From down the line, the same distinction reads at the top of the backswing, where the orientation of the clubface relative to the forearm is the indicator.

Common mistakes

  • Working only on the grip — it is the most common way to influence this joint, but the two are not the same thing. A strong grip does not guarantee the position; the joint has to actually get there, not merely be predisposed toward it.
  • Over-correcting from cupped into excessively bowed, which is a very common overshoot. The target is flat to slightly bowed, not maximum bowing.
  • Watching only the top of the backswing — it is a useful checkpoint, but impact is the moment that matters. Cupped at the top and flat at impact is a perfectly valid pattern; flat at the top and cupped at impact is still a flip.
  • Not connecting any of this to ball flight — a change here should produce a predictable change out there. If less cupping does not produce a less open face and a smaller slice, other compensations are managing the face and they need attention too.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage can observe this joint from video at two key positions: the top of the backswing and the impact zone. It reads hand orientation, shaft lean at impact, and the visible arc of the arm through the strike. Observations are confidence-labeled based on camera angle and video quality.
