Definition

Beginner tip

After every ball hit in practice, assess whether you went directly to where the ball went or took an inefficient curved or redirected route. This means conscious post-play route assessment is the fastest way to improve the read-and-react sequencing that makes range efficient.

Advanced note

Study the pre-pitch positioning data for your position across your most recent sessions and identify the hitter spray patterns where your starting position is most misaligned with contact frequency. This means the biggest range gains are almost always in pre-pitch positioning rather than foot speed or reaction time.

Example

How it shows up on video

On video, defensive range is evaluated not just at the catch point but at the pre-pitch position and the quality of the first directional step. Common errors include a too-deep initial position that requires too much ground to be covered on balls in the gap, a first step that goes the wrong direction before correcting (indicating a poor ball-off-bat read). A body-control failure at the catch point where the fielder reaches the ball but cannot convert the reach into a secure catch.

Common mistakes

  • Conflating foot speed with range — many fast athletes who do not read the ball or pre-position well have below-average defensive range despite their physical speed
  • Setting up in a fixed position for every hitter regardless of their spray tendency. This leaves predictable range gaps in the areas where the hitter most frequently makes contact
  • Breaking in the wrong direction on line drives hit directly to the fielder's zone. This means a ball hit hard straight at a fielder can be misread as a ball dropping in front or carrying over the head
  • Failing to adjust route mid-pursuit when the initial read turns out to be slightly off. This means fielders who cannot adjust their angle after the first two steps are leaving potential range on the table through rigidity of movement

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage analyses the fielder's starting position, first-step direction, and route efficiency from pre-pitch to catch point, computing the ratio of direct-path distance to actual path distance as a route efficiency score. A score above 1.15 indicates significant route inefficiency that is costing the fielder range — useful ground is covered but wasted through indirect routing.
