Definition

Beginner tip

On every grounder in practice, approach the ball on a slight arc that brings you to the left of the ball (for right-handers) rather than directly behind it. This means your body's forward momentum will naturally carry you toward the throw target and eliminate the stop-and-restart that slows every straight-line approach.

Advanced note

Film your fielding footwork from directly behind the plate on a side-angle and count how many steps you take after fielding before your throw foot is set to the target. This means elite infielders complete the field-to-throw in one continuous footwork motion. Additional steps indicate a footwork pattern that should be streamlined.

Example

How it shows up on video

On video, fielding footwork is evaluated by the approach angle to the ball and the position of the feet at the moment of fielding contact. Common errors include a straight-line approach that brings the fielder's momentum directly behind the ball (requiring a full stop before throwing), the glove-side foot landing too close to the ball (forcing the fielder to reach across their body rather than fielding in front and slightly left). The fielder catching a pop-up. At the same time, moving backward (increasing the chances of a drop and eliminating the ability to follow through immediately into a throw).

Common mistakes

  • Approaching grounders in a straight line directly behind the ball rather than on an arc to the left of it, eliminating forward throwing momentum and requiring a full stop before the throw can begin
  • Fielding the ball directly in front of the body rather than slightly to the glove side. This forces an across-the-body transfer that is both slower and mechanically awkward compared to an open-glove-side field
  • Catching pop-ups. At the same time, moving backward. This means a reactive pattern where the fielder did not get depth early enough and must now catch in the most difficult possible body position
  • Rushing the approach to field a slow roller before gathering the throwing footwork. This produces accurate fielding but an off-balance throw that is more error-prone than a slightly slower but well-set throw would be

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage tracks body position and foot alignment at the moment of fielding contact, measuring the angle between the fielder's forward momentum and the intended throw direction. A large angle between these vectors. This means indicating that the fielder's body is pointed away from the throw target at the moment of fielding. This means predicts a transfer and throwing difficulty that sets up future error.
