Definition

How it shows up on video

IVB is not directly visible on standard video but its effects are observable. This means a high-IVB fastball generates swings that pass under the ball at the top of the zone, with the bat travelling through a space where the hitter expected the ball to be. Common errors related to poor IVB include a four-seamer that "flattens out" as it crosses the plate (low backspin), visible early drop compared to the expected fastball plane. A pitch that arrives at nearly the same height as breaking balls. This means removing the vertical separation that makes the fastball dangerous up in the zone.

Common mistakes

  • Sacrificing spin axis for spin rate — maximising RPM with a gyroscopic tilt produces no IVB benefit and a dead ball despite high total spin numbers
  • Locating a high-IVB four-seamer at the bottom of the zone where its carry advantage is completely lost and it becomes an easy pitch to elevate for power
  • Mistaking low velocity for low IVB when the true cause is a tilted spin axis. This means chasing velocity gains when the real fix is a grip or wrist adjustment
  • Ignoring spin efficiency data in favour of raw RPM, missing the distinction between active spin (which creates IVB) and gyroscopic spin (which does not)
