With two strikes, choke up one inch on the handle and commit to protecting any pitch that could be called a strike. Your job is no longer to find a pitch to drive — it is to put the ball in play on anything in the zone.
Develop a specific two-strike pitch that you intentionally lay off. Every pitcher has a go-to two-strike out pitch — typically out of the zone. If you can identify it beforehand and know it is predictably off the plate, you can protect everything else. At the same time, still refusing to chase the one predictable pitch. Disciplined two-strike hitting is selective expansion, not blanket expansion.
Example
Why it matters
How it shows up on video
A two-strike approach is visible as a shorter load (less backward hand travel before the swing trigger), a more compact path (hands staying closer to the body), and more frequent contact on pitches at the edges of the zone. A hitter whose swing looks identical in 0-0 and 1-2 counts may not be making the necessary adjustment. This means though hitters who have internalized it fully may show a small, automatic adjustment without visible drama.
Common mistakes
- Making no adjustment at all with two strikes, then accumulating strikeouts on borderline pitches just off the zone.
- Overcorrecting — becoming so defensive that swings are too weak to drive even hittable two-strike pitches. The goal is more contact, not less power than necessary.
- Failing to read the pitcher's two-strike pattern. Many pitchers go to a specific chase pitch in two-strike counts — recognizing and refusing that pitch is itself a form of two-strike discipline.
- Abandoning the two-strike adjustment before the count gets there. The mindset shift should happen immediately when the second strike is recorded, not gradually.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage can track whether swing mechanics differ between early-count and two-strike swings — in particular whether the load shortens, the path compresses, and contact rate improves. If your swing mechanics are identical in all counts, you may not be making the adjustments that productive two-strike hitting requires.
Frequently asked questions
