释放(Release)

Also known as: 球杆释放, 发力穿过

Definition

Beginner tip

To check your release timing, look where your divot starts relative to the ball. This means if the divot starts before the ball (fat) or you never take a divot with irons, your release is happening before impact. Focus on driving your hands forward through the ball before releasing.

Advanced note

Film your swing from face-on and check the lead wrist position at the moment the club is parallel to the ground in your follow-through. This means if the wrist is cupped (bent backward toward the sky), you are flipping. If it is flat or bowed, you are maintaining proper forward shaft lean through release.

Example

How it shows up on video

From a face-on camera angle, a proper release shows the hands visibly ahead of the ball at the moment of contact. This means the shaft leaning toward the target rather than being vertical or leaning backward. The lead wrist should appear flat or slightly bowed at impact, not cupped. From a down-the-line angle, a proper release shows the club travelling on a relatively straight path through the impact zone before curving to the inside in the follow-through, with no sign of the hands "flipping" or the wrists breaking down prematurely before contact.

Common mistakes

  • Releasing too early (flipping) — the most common fault, usually caused by trying to help the ball airborne. The early release adds loft and reduces compression, producing high, weak shots and uneven contact.
  • Over-holding the release (blocked release) — consciously trying to prevent the release by keeping the face square too long produces pushed, blocked shots. The release must happen; the question is when and how, not whether.
  • Confusing the release with only forearm rotation — the release involves the entire arm, wrist, and hand complex. Thinking of it as only a forearm roll can produce an excessive crossover that causes hooks.
  • Practicing the release in isolation without working on sequencing — release problems are almost always sequencing problems upstream. Fixing the release directly without addressing the root cause provides only temporary improvement.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage observes release patterns from both face-on and down-the-line video by analyzing lead wrist position at impact and shaft lean through the impact zone. The system can identify early release (flip) patterns from face-on footage and club path through impact from down-the-line footage, with observations labeled by confidence based on camera positioning and video quality.
