(Casting)

Definition

Beginner tip

Place a glove under your lead armpit and keep it there through the downswing. This means this encourages the connected, arms-close-to-body motion that naturally delays the release and reduces casting.

Advanced note

Train lag with the "pump drill". This means make three small downswing pumps stopping at hip height before actually swinging through. This means this builds the kinesthetic feel of maintaining wrist angles deep into the downswing before releasing.

Example

How it shows up on video

From a down-the-line camera angle, casting is visible as the club shaft losing its angle early in the downswing. This means the shaft will look nearly straight well before the hands reach hip height, rather than maintaining a sharp angle. From a face-on angle, the telltale sign is the lead wrist cupping (bending backward) through impact rather than remaining flat or bowed. This means and the hands appearing level with or behind the clubhead at impact rather than leading it.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to "help" the ball up by scooping at impact — this is the core casting motion. Trust the loft of the club to get the ball airborne; your job is to drive the hands forward.
  • Over-gripping to prevent the release. This means tightening the grip does not preserve lag. It creates tension that actually makes the early release worse by locking out the wrist hinge.
  • Confusing casting with "releasing the club" — a proper release happens after impact, not before. Casting is a pre-impact release; the goal is to delay the release, not eliminate it entirely.
  • Practicing with very slow swings that do not load the wrists — lag practice requires enough speed to feel the wrist hinge. Half-speed drills can reinforce casting if there is no actual load being maintained.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage can identify casting patterns by observing shaft angle in the early downswing relative to ideal delivery positions, and by detecting lead wrist position at the impact zone from video. The system flags confidence level based on camera angle and video quality, since wrist and shaft angles are most accurately read from down-the-line footage.
