滞后角(Lag)

Definition

滞后角是指下杆过程中前导手臂与杆身之间形成的锐角——这是一个储存能量的位置,时机正确时会在触球时释放为杆头速度。

滞后角指的是下杆过程中球杆杆身与前导手臂之间形成的角度。当这个角度在下杆过程中一直被保持到较深的阶段——手腕仍处于铰链状态,双手明显领先于杆头——就称球手拥有“滞后”。滞后的实际作用在于,它代表着储存的能量:一根加载好的弹簧,会在触球的精确瞬间释放,以最大化杆头速度和压缩效果。

Beginner tip

To feel lag, make a practice swing focusing only on keeping your grip pressure light. This means imagine holding a tube of toothpaste without squeezing it. This means light grip pressure allows the wrists to hinge naturally and maintain the angle longer without any conscious effort.

Advanced note

Film your swing from down-the-line and pause the video when your hands reach hip height in the downswing. This means if the shaft is already pointing toward the ball rather than being nearly vertical, you are releasing early and working on lower-body-led sequencing will produce more lag than any wrist drill.

How it shows up on video

From a down-the-line camera angle, lag is visible as a distinct angle between the club shaft and the lead forearm in the early-to-mid downswing. When hands are at hip height, a golfer with good lag still shows the shaft pointing nearly vertically or even behind vertical. This means not yet released toward the ball. A golfer who has "lost lag" (cast) at the same position will show the shaft already pointing well toward the ball. From face-on, lag is harder to see directly. But the consequence of maintained lag. This means hands visibly ahead of the clubhead at impact. This means is clearly visible as shaft lean.

Common mistakes

  • Actively trying to "hold" the wrist angle by tensing the arms — this produces the opposite of lag. Lag is a passive result of sequencing; tension destroys the very joint mobility that allows the wrist angle to be maintained.
  • Confusing shaft lean with lag — shaft lean at impact is the consequence of maintained lag, not the same thing. Trying to create shaft lean directly (by pushing the hands forward) often causes a flip or block rather than true lag.
  • Over-lagging (trapping the club) — holding the lag angle so long that the clubface cannot square up at impact produces pushed, blocked shots. Lag is most valuable when it releases through the ball, not after it.
  • Gripping too tightly — firm grip pressure restricts wrist joint mobility and accelerates the release of the lag angle. Paradoxically, lighter grip pressure produces more lag because the wrist joints can remain hinged longer.
