转换(Transition)

Also known as: 方向转变

Definition

Beginner tip

Think of the transition as two things happening at once. This means your lead hip bumps toward the target AND your trail shoulder stays back. This means this combination keeps the lower body leading and the upper body passive. This is the foundation of a good transition.

Advanced note

Train transition sequencing with the "pause at the top and fire the hips" drill. This means make a full backswing, pause for a full second at the top, then initiate the downswing ONLY with the lead hip moving toward the target before anything else moves. This means this exaggerated drill teaches the body what lower-body lead actually feels like before building it into a continuous motion.

Example

How it shows up on video

From a face-on camera angle, a good transition shows the lead hip visibly moving toward the target. At the same time, the shoulders are still rotating backward or at their peak turn. This means you can see the hip-shoulder gap maintained or even briefly widening at the start of the downswing. A poor transition (shoulders first) shows both hips and shoulders beginning to rotate together immediately, with no visible lag in the upper body. From a down-the-line angle, watch the shaft. This means a good transition shows the shaft dropping below the backswing plane (shallowing). A poor transition shows the shaft moving outside the plane (over the top).

Common mistakes

  • Initiating the downswing with the shoulders — the most common transition fault. It produces over-the-top delivery and cannot be corrected once the downswing is underway at full speed.
  • Pausing at the top. This means intentionally or unintentionally stopping the swing at the top of the backswing breaks the stretch-shorten cycle and removes the elastic energy stored during the transition. Rhythm drills help retrain continuous motion.
  • Rushing the transition — trying to swing faster by speeding up the transition typically fires the upper body earlier, which is working against the goal. Speed comes from sequence, not from rushing.
  • Overloading the backswing at the expense of transition quality — golfers who focus on making the longest possible backswing often sacrifice transition sequencing. A shorter backswing with a better transition produces more speed than a long backswing with a poor one.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage analyzes the transition by examining the timing relationship between hip and shoulder rotation in the early downswing from video. The system can detect whether the hips lead or the shoulders fire first. This provides sequencing observations that are labeled by confidence level based on video quality and camera angle. This means most reliably identified from face-on or slightly above face-on footage.
