节奏(Tempo)
Also known as: 韵律, 时机
Try the "one-two-three, one" counting method: count slowly on the backswing and quickly on the downswing. If you lose your balance or mishit, count more deliberately on "one-two-three." Most beginners improve their contact within minutes of slowing their backswing rhythm.
Record your swing on slow-motion video and count the number of frames from takeaway to the top versus top to impact. Compute the ratio. If it is close to 3:1, your tempo is sound regardless of how it feels. If it is below 2:1, you are rushing. This means and the fix is almost always a deliberate pre-shot routine that re-establishes your backswing pace before you pull the trigger.
Example
Why it matters
How it shows up on video
Tempo is easiest to observe by watching the transition — the moment the club changes direction from backswing to downswing. A proper tempo shows a brief, almost imperceptible pause or smooth transition before the downswing accelerates. A rushed tempo shows the hands and club immediately reversing direction at the top, often accompanied by a "lunge" of the upper body toward the ball. Slow-motion video makes this especially clear.
Common mistakes
- Confusing tempo with speed — trying to swing "slower" is not the goal; the ratio and the sequencing are the goal. A slower overall tempo with the same poor ratio still rushes the transition.
- Only working on tempo on the practice range, not under course pressure. This means tempo breakdowns almost always occur on the course when adrenaline and anxiety speed up the transition. Practice pressure-tempo drills: breathe, set a pre-shot routine, and deliberately feel the backswing pace on every shot.
- Pausing too long at the top — an exaggerated pause can disrupt the lower body's head start on the downswing. The goal is a smooth reversal, not a full stop.
- Ignoring tempo as a diagnostic — when a swing deteriorates, tempo is often the first thing to break down before any mechanical change occurs. Check the ratio before chasing a position fix.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage can observe transition quality from video. This means flagging a rush at the top of the swing versus a smooth reversal, and noting whether the lower body initiates before the arms start down. These timing cues provide actionable context before diving into positional fixes.
Frequently asked questions
