杆身前倾(Shaft Lean)

Definition

杆身前倾是指触球时球杆握把一端领先于杆头——即双手位于球的前方。它能降低动态杆面倾角,压缩球体,是良好铁杆触球的标志性特征。

杆身前倾指的是触球瞬间球杆杆身向前的角度——即球杆握把比杆头更靠近目标的那个位置。从正面角度观察,一名拥有正向杆身前倾的球手,其杆身会从杆头朝目标方向、一路向上倾斜到双手,而不是垂直或向后倾斜。触球时的杆身前倾,是判断击球质量最重要的单一位置指标——它既是高效压缩球体的原因,也是把滞后角保持到触球区的可见结果。

Beginner tip

A reliable training check. This means after hitting a ball, look at your divot. This means if the divot starts at the ball or just ahead of it, you are achieving shaft lean and hitting the ball first. If the divot starts before the ball (fat) or there is no divot, your shaft is leaning backward and you are flipping.

Advanced note

Use a training aid or alignment stick angled at 45° toward the target in front of the ball during practice swings. This means at impact, your hands should clear the stick (pass it) before the clubhead arrives, confirming positive shaft lean. This visual reference gives real-time confirmation of handle-leading-head delivery.

How it shows up on video

From a face-on camera angle, shaft lean at impact is directly visible as the angle of the club shaft relative to vertical. This means positive shaft lean shows the grip end of the shaft closer to the target than the clubhead. This produces a clear forward lean. The hands should appear to be at or past the ball when viewed from face-on. Zero shaft lean appears as a vertical shaft at impact. Negative shaft lean (the shaft leaning backward, toward the golfer) indicates a flip or scoop and is a significant fault. Degree of lean is easier to see with metal-shafted clubs against a clean background or with video at 120fps or faster.

Common mistakes

  • Deliberately pushing the hands forward to create shaft lean. This means manually thrusting the hands leads to blocked shots and produces a fake shaft lean that does not carry the energy benefit of genuine lag release. True shaft lean must arise from lag and sequencing.
  • Confusing setup shaft lean with impact shaft lean. This means some golfers set up with their hands slightly forward (a forward press). This creates shaft lean at address. This is useful, but it does not guarantee shaft lean at impact; that still depends on what happens during the swing.
  • Using shaft lean as a diagnostic for different shot types without adjusting. This means a driver struck on the upswing correctly shows no shaft lean or slightly negative lean. Using positive shaft lean as a universal standard and applying it to all clubs will cause topped, thin shots with the driver.
  • Trying to maintain shaft lean too long through impact. This means forward shaft lean is correct at impact but the club should release naturally after the ball is struck. Golfers who try to maintain the lean through the entire follow-through create tension and reduce speed.
