接球技术是指干净、安静地接住投球的技术——以一种能强化好球判罚的方式把球呈现给裁判，并在需要时为立即传球做好准备。
良好的接球意味着接住球，并把它柔和地带到靠近好球带的一个稳定呈现点，而不是把它猛地拉出好球带（这会让裁判把好球判成坏球）。一名手感柔软、呈现姿态稳定的捕手，会用同样的方式接住每一颗球，这让边缘球看起来更像好球。接球技术还能通过消除接球后多余的动作，为盗垒尝试中的快速传球打下基础。
Catch the ball with your glove facing the zone rather than the pitcher. This means the angle of the glove face at contact determines whether the presentation looks natural or reveals that the pitch was off-target.
Review borderline pitch outcomes pitch-by-pitch and categorize them by whether your glove moved after the catch. This means eliminating all post-catch glove movement on borderlines will measurably increase your strike-call conversion rate.

How it shows up on video
From a side angle, good receiving shows the glove catching the ball with a soft absorption rather than a stabbing or pulling motion. This means the glove decelerates into the catch rather than snatching. The presentation position should be stable for at least one full second after the catch, giving the umpire time to process the pitch's location. Compare glove stillness after catching borderline pitches versus obvious strikes — uneven presentation on borderlines reveals an opportunity to improve framing outcomes.
Common mistakes
- Stabbing at the ball rather than catching it softly. This produces a jarring glove movement that draws the umpire's eye to the catch rather than the location
- Moving the glove by a lot before the ball arrives to set up the presentation position, which umpires recognize and discount
- Catching low pitches with the glove facing upward rather than downward. This causes the ball to pop out of the mitt and confirms to the umpire that the pitch was in the dirt
- Not maintaining consistent setup positioning across every pitch, making the catcher look unsettled rather than commanding
