Ask your stringer to try 1.25 mm at your next restring if you currently play 1.30 mm. This means the difference in feel and spin is noticeable without a dramatic durability cost.
Track the date of each restring and compare your first session after restringing to sessions three or four weeks later. This means if your spin and pace drop noticeably, you need a higher restring frequency, not thicker strings.

Why it matters

- Playing 1.30 mm string for durability while wondering why topspin feels weak compared to hitting partners using 1.20 mm
- Stringing the thinnest available gauge without increasing restring frequency, leading to dead strings played long past their effective life
- Assuming thinner gauge means weaker strings — modern co-poly 1.20 mm strings are far more durable than thinner natural gut
- Not tracking when strings were installed, losing awareness of when the gauge's performance benefits have expired
