Tips by skill level
You do not need a launch monitor to estimate it. Watch the start and the curve: the start points to your face angle, the curve to the gap. If the ball starts right and curves further right, the face is open and the gap is positive. Fix the face first, by strengthening the grip, and the gap narrows even if the path never moves.
On a monitor, log face angle and path separately, then compute the difference. Track both numbers independently and you will notice they respond to different interventions: grip and wrist position change face angle. Transition and sequencing drills change path. Work one variable at a time until each is in its target range, then calibrate them together.
Example —
Why it matters
It converts "it curves too much" into a precise, trainable target. Knowing the number tells you immediately whether the problem sits in the face, which is the faster fix, or the path, which needs sequencing work.
How it shows up on video
It is a launch-monitor metric. But the effects are visible in ball flight. A positive figure imparts sidespin that curves the ball away from its start direction to the right. The larger the gap, the more dramatic the curve. A negative one does the opposite. Divot direction plus start direction together give a qualitative estimate without a launch monitor.
Common mistakes
- Chasing the path before fixing the face — for most slicers the face is easier to move, through grip and wrist, and produces faster results than sequencing work.
- Conflating face angle with the gap — a face 3° open to target can sit alongside a negative figure if the path is more positive still. Evaluate them together, not separately.
- Targeting zero for "straight" shots. It does produce them. But nearly every elite player carries a consistent shape instead. This is because a repeatable curve is more predictable than trying to go straight.
- Adjusting the path when the face is the primary cause. A +10° gap built from an +8° open face and a −2° path stays wide open if you fix only the path.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
Motion Lab does not track the ball or read the face or path, so it cannot estimate face-to-path from video. The number comes from a launch monitor. Imported sessions show it labeled with the device, and the Diagnose page checks it for slice and hook patterns. On the range, note each ball's start line and curve to judge face versus path yourself.
How this is known
- What it is
- The difference between face angle and club path at impact; it mostly sets the curve.
- Units
- Degrees
- Measured against
- Face angle minus club path
- Plus and minus
- Plus curves the ball right for a right-handed golfer (fade or slice); minus curves it left (draw or hook).
- Usually known by
- Calculated from measured inputs — from a launch monitor's face angle and club path
- In Motion Lab
- Not currently measured. Motion Lab does not read face or path from video. Imported launch-monitor sessions show face-to-path, labelled with the device.
Frequently asked questions
