Tips by skill level
Bat speed follows sequence, not effort. Relax the grip slightly, fire the hips early, and let the hands follow. Tightening the grip and muscling the swing is the single most common bat-speed killer in younger hitters.
Track the time from hip-fire to contact (the swing trigger lag) rather than just bat speed in isolation. Elite hitters generate significant bat speed over a very short time window because their sequential chain is tight. Longer lag often indicates a missing link in the chain — usually the core or hip connection.
Example
Why it matters
Bat speed is the engine of exit velocity, but the transmission is your swing sequence. Motion Lab reads that sequence and flags arms that fire before the hips, the difference between sustainable power and effort-dependent results.
How it shows up on video
Bat speed is not directly readable from standard phone video, but the mechanics that drive it are. Look for whether the hips open aggressively before the hands move, whether there is a visible hip-to-shoulder lag (the torso lags behind the hips for a split second), and whether the barrel arrives at contact with the arms extended or still bent. A sequentially driven swing looks smooth and balanced; an arm-dominant swing looks effortful even when slow.
Common mistakes
- Over-swinging in an attempt to increase bat speed, which usually breaks the kinematic chain and reduces the speed it was meant to increase.
- Training arm strength as the primary bat speed lever. Arm strength contributes less to bat speed than hip rotation and core transfer.
- Measuring peak bat speed from one or two maximum-effort swings rather than tracking average bat speed across a session. This is more predictive of game performance.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
Motion Lab does not measure bat speed. On a hitting swing it may show a rough "Bat ~N mph" estimate from your arm movement, which tends to read low. Use it only to compare your own swings filmed the same way. It also flags faults that often cost speed, such as casting and hips that stop turning.
How this is known
- What it is
- How fast the bat's sweet spot is moving at contact.
- Units
- Miles per hour
- Usually known by
- Measured by an instrument — a bat sensor or a calibrated camera system
- In Motion Lab
- Estimated. Motion Lab can show a rough bat-speed estimate inferred from your arms. It is not calibrated and tends to read low, so compare it only with your own swings filmed the same way.
Frequently asked questions

- Ángulo de ataque (bateo) (attack angle)Attack angle in batting is the vertical angle of the bat path through the hitting zone. A slightly upward attack angle matches the pitch plane for hard contact. Statcast treats 5 to 20 degrees at contact as the ideal range.
