For a more consistent putting stroke, put a rubber band around your lead wrist and the shaft of the putter. This means if your wrist breaks down through impact, the band will pull tight. This immediate feedback trains the flat lead wrist that is the foundation of a consistent putting stroke.
Record 20 putts from 10 feet using a camera positioned at hole level (facing the golfer) and check the putter face angle at impact on each one. For a face-balanced putter, the face should appear square (perpendicular to your view) at impact for each putt. Any variation. This means face open on some, closed on others. This means quantifies your face-angle uneven results and tells you whether the stroke or the grip is the source of variability.
Example
How it shows up on video
From a face-on camera angle, the putting stroke is evaluated for shoulder-rock versus wrist-flip, face angle stability at impact, and stroke length proportionality (backswing versus follow-through). A shoulder-driven stroke shows the shoulders rocking while the wrists remain quiet and the putter moves smoothly. A wristy stroke shows the hands rotating and the putter face opening and closing through the stroke. From a down-the-line angle, the stroke path (inside-square-inside versus straight) and the face angle relative to the start line at impact are directly observable.
Common mistakes
- Breaking down the lead wrist at impact — a cupped lead wrist at impact is the putting equivalent of a flip in the full swing. It opens the face and pushes the ball to the right (for a right-hander). The lead wrist should remain flat through impact.
- Using different tempo for long versus short putts — changing stroke tempo for different length putts introduces uneven results. The best approach is to change the backswing length (and matching follow-through) while maintaining the same tempo.
- Looking up to see if the putt goes in — premature head movement disrupts the stroke arc and shoulder rock. Keep the head still until after the ball has been struck, then allow it to rotate toward the hole.
- Gripping the putter too tightly — heavy grip pressure in putting kills feel and restricts the pendulum motion of the stroke. Putting grip pressure should be lighter than full-swing pressure — a 3–4/10 is appropriate for most putters.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage evaluates the putting stroke from face-on video by analyzing shoulder versus wrist motion, lead wrist position at impact, stroke path, and tempo consistency across multiple putts. The system can detect the wristy versus shoulder-driven pattern and flag lead wrist breakdown at impact. Confidence labels reflect video quality and whether the impact zone is clearly visible in the available footage.
