Hit and Run

Definition

Beginner tip

If you're the hitter on a hit-and-run, your only job is to put the ball on the ground somewhere in fair territory. This means swing at anything near the strike zone and aim downward to keep the runner safe.

Advanced note

As the runner on a hit-and-run, use your lead to read the hitter's swing commitment before the pitcher releases. This means go only when the hitter commits to swing, not at the release point alone.

Example

How it shows up on video

From a center-field camera you can see the runner's break at the same time with the hitter's swing commitment. This means if the runner goes early and the hitter swings late, the timing breakdown is visible as a misaligned sequence rather than a synchronized play. A successful hit-and-run shows the runner already passing second as the ball travels through the vacated gap. Watch for the middle infielder moving to cover the steal, creating the defensive hole the batter must exploit.

Common mistakes

  • The hitter not swinging at a bad pitch. This is because they forgot or chose not to protect the running runner. This turns the hit-and-run into a stolen base attempt with an exposed baserunner
  • The runner breaking before confirming the pitch is in a hittable location, making it a hit-and-run on an unhittable pitch with no defensive advantage
  • The hitter swinging upward instead of down-and-through, producing a fly ball that allows the defense to double off the runner
  • Not having a verbal or visual confirmation signal that both hitter and runner correctly received the hit-and-run call

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

Motion Lab analyzes the hitter's swing path and contact angle on hit-and-run attempts to measure how often contact produces ground balls versus fly balls. This means the former advances runners, the latter creates double play risk.

Frequently asked questions
