Definition

L'hit and run è una giocata offensiva in cui la corridrice in base parte verso la base successiva sul pitch, impegnando la difesa, mentre la battitrice prende contatto per mettere la palla in gioco e proteggere la corridrice che sta correndo.

If you're the hitter on a hit-and-run, your only job is to put the ball on the ground somewhere in fair territory. This means swing at anything near the strike zone and aim downward to keep the runner safe.

As the runner on a hit-and-run, use your lead to read the hitter's swing commitment before the pitcher releases. This means go only when the hitter commits to swing, not at the release point alone.

How it shows up on video

Watch for the middle infielder moving to cover the steal, creating the defensive hole the batter must exploit.

The hitter not swinging at a bad pitch. This is because they forgot or chose not to protect the running runner. This turns the hit-and-run into a stolen base attempt with an exposed baserunner
The runner breaking before confirming the pitch is in a hittable location, making it a hit-and-run on an unhittable pitch with no defensive advantage
The hitter swinging upward instead of down-and-through, producing a fly ball that allows the defense to double off the runner
Not having a verbal or visual confirmation signal that both hitter and runner correctly received the hit-and-run call
