Pressure Shift

Also known as: center of pressure, CoP shift

Definition

Beginner tip

At the finish of your swing, check whether you can lift your trail foot off the ground without losing your balance. This means if you can, your pressure has successfully shifted to the lead side. If you wobble or fall backward, your pressure shift is incomplete.

Advanced note

During practice, use a deliberate trail heel lift as the first move of your downswing. This means the conscious act of lifting the heel forces pressure into the lead foot and triggers proper kinematic chain sequencing. This produces more consistent and powerful contact than thinking about the swing itself.

Example — Riset force plate

Pada force plate, pemain tour menunjukkan 70% tekanan kaki-depan pada awal downswing — sebelum club berubah arah — namun pusat massa mereka masih tersentral.

How it shows up on video

From a face-on camera angle, pressure shift is indirectly visible through several cues. This means the trail heel lifting off the ground during the downswing (lead-side pressure loading), the finish position with the trail foot balanced on its toes (complete transfer). The body's lean toward the target through impact. A reverse pivot is visible as the lead hip moving away from the target in the backswing and the body appearing to lean toward the target during the backswing. This means both signs that the pressure pattern is backward relative to ideal.

Common mistakes

  • Reverse pivot — loading the lead foot in the backswing and shifting to the trail foot in the downswing is the most damaging pressure fault. It eliminates ground force from the lead side entirely and usually produces a flip or early release at impact.
  • Hanging back (incomplete lead-side transfer). This means failing to complete the pressure shift to the lead foot produces weak, high shots. This is because the ground force is not available to drive the kinematic chain through impact.
  • Confusing a weight shift with a sway — pressure shift does not require the body to move sharply sideways. The shift in foot pressure can occur with minimal lateral body movement when hip rotation is driving the change.
  • Using a static pressure setup that never changes. This means some golfers set up with 60% of pressure on the lead side for iron shots. This is correct. But then never shift further during the backswing and downswing. Even from a forward-weighted setup, there should be a dynamic pressure increase on the lead side during the downswing.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage tracks pressure shift indicators from video. This means especially trail heel behavior, finish position balance, and body lean through impact. This means to provide observations about the quality and timing of the golfer's pressure shift. These visual cues correlate with measured pressure data, though the system notes that direct pressure measurement requires dedicated hardware beyond standard video analysis.
