Definition

L'hand path è il percorso che le mani compiono dalla posizione di carico fino al contatto — un percorso efficiente e diretto verso la palla mantiene il barrel nella zona più a lungo e previene il casting.

La distanza più breve tra le mani in fase di carico e il punto di contatto è un percorso inside-out leggermente curvo, che porta il pomolo verso la palla prima che il barrel scatti. Percorsi delle mani lunghi o ampi trascinano il barrel intorno all'esterno della zona, producendo contatti deboli. I percorsi inside-out permettono al battitore di coprire i lanci sulla metà esterna colpendoli comunque in pieno. Hand path e barrel path sono collegati — correggere l'hand path è spesso il modo più diretto per correggere il barrel path.

Il segnale "pomolo verso la palla" è il modo più pratico per capire un hand path efficiente. La mano inferiore guida il pomolo della mazza direttamente verso la zona di contatto prima che la mano superiore faccia scattare il barrel. Questo sequencing mantiene il barrel dentro le mani — una relazione geometrica in cui il barrel è più vicino al corpo rispetto alle mani per tutta la prima fase dello swing — fino a poco prima del contatto, quando il barrel scatta in avanti. Quando le mani percorrono un tragitto lungo e ampio verso l'esterno, il barrel precede le mani in anticipo e la geometria si inverte: il barrel è fuori rispetto alle mani, producendo casting e riducendo la finestra di contatto utile.

La localizzazione del lancio cambia la direzione ottimale dell'hand path ma non il suo principio di efficienza. I lanci interni richiedono che le mani guidino il pomolo verso la palla sulla metà interna, iniziando il contatto più avanti rispetto al corpo. I lanci esterni richiedono che le mani estendano il pomolo verso il bordo esterno con una leggera direzione inside-out che mantenga il barrel nella zona più a lungo su quel lato del piatto. I battitori che hanno un solo hand path — dritto o leggermente outside-in — non riescono a coprire efficacemente entrambe le metà del piatto.

Beginner tip

Drill the "knob to the ball" cue in slow-motion dry swings in front of a mirror. The knob of the bat should point directly at an imaginary pitch before the barrel begins to move, ensuring the hands are leading the barrel correctly.

Advanced note

Practice location-specific hand path drills where you explicitly adjust the knob direction for inner-half, middle, and outer-half targets — building three distinct hand path patterns that fire automatically in games based on pitch location rather than a single path applied to every pitch.

How it shows up on video

On video, hand path is traced from the load position through contact and measured as the route the bottom hand takes relative to the body midline. Common errors visible on camera include the front elbow flying outward before the knob moves toward the contact zone (a primary cause of casting), the hands looping below the back shoulder rather than driving directly toward the ball (producing an upper cut that is too steep for most pitch heights), and the knob moving away from the body rather than toward the pitch (adding unnecessary inches to the barrel's travel distance and reducing swing speed through the zone).

Common mistakes

Allowing the front elbow to fly outward at the beginning of the swing. This pulls the hands outside the body line and starts casting before the barrel has moved an inch
Looping the hands below the back shoulder on high pitches in an attempt to get under the ball. This produces a steep upward path that catches only the bottom of high fastballs
Using an identical hand path on pitches at different locations rather than adjusting the knob direction based on where the pitch is located in the zone
Firing the top hand to generate power before the bottom hand has established the knob-to-ball direction. This flips the casting sequence and bypasses the directional control the bottom hand provides
