ハンディキャップインデックスとは、ワールドハンディキャップシステム(WHS)による、中立的なコースでのゴルファーの実証済みのプレー能力の指標だ。数値が低いほど、より優れた選手であることを意味する。

Register for an official handicap through your country's golf association or a recognized handicap service — most are low-cost or free through club memberships. Posting scores regularly gives you an objective, globally-comparable measure of your development over time, which is far more useful than remembering your best round.
Track your handicap differential trend (not just the index) to understand whether your improvements are consistent or variable. This means a handicap that improves slowly and steadily (e.g., 18 to 17 to 16 over a year) indicates systematic improvement across many rounds. One that swings up and down (18 to 16 to 19 to 15) indicates high variance that may respond to mental game or course management work more than swing technique.

How it shows up on video
Handicap index is not directly observable from swing video, but it provides important context for interpreting swing analysis. A golfer's handicap level informs realistic expectations for swing consistency, contact quality. The degree to which mechanical improvements can be expected to produce scoring improvements. Common mistakes
- Treating handicap as average score minus par — handicap index represents potential (best 8 of 20 rounds), not average. Expecting to play to your handicap every round leads to frustration; expecting to play to it on your best rounds is realistic.
- Not maintaining an active official handicap index — unofficial handicap estimates (self-reported) are uneven and not comparable across golfers. Maintaining an official index (through a recognized club or service) produces comparable, trustworthy data.
- Thinking handicap improvement means swing improvement alone. This means scoring improvement (which drives handicap improvement) comes from all elements of the game. This means swing mechanics, course management, short game, putting, and mental game. Tracking only swing mechanics while ignoring the other elements produces incomplete improvement.
- Gaming the handicap (sandbagging). This means intentionally playing poorly on handicap rounds, inflating the handicap for competition advantage, undermines the entire system and is explicitly against the rules of golf. Even without formal penalty, consistent sandbagging produces inflated handicaps that reduce meaningful scoring development tracking.
