ベースラインプレー
Also known as: バックコートプレー, 後方にとどまること
ベースラインプレーとは、キッチンへ前進するのではなく、意図的にコートの後方近くにとどまり、ドライブとドロップを使うことを指す。しばしば守備的、あるいはリセットの戦略として使われる。
ピックルボールにおける従来の常識は、できるだけ速くキッチンラインへ前進することだが、ベースラインプレーには正当な戦術的応用がある。リターナーはサーブを受けた後ベースラインから始まり、いつ前進するかを決めなければならない。強いグラウンドストロークを持つ一部の選手は、相手を守勢に立たせるためにバックコートからドライブすることを好む。他の選手は、キッチンラインでの戦いが不利になっているときにベースラインをリセットゾーンとして使う。リスクは、キッチンラインにいる相手が、ベースラインの選手に対して深刻な角度の優位性を持つことだ。
ベースラインプレーは、キッチンラインの忍耐力に欠ける相手——スピードアップしすぎる、ポーチしすぎる、あるいは長いディンクのラリーで一貫性を欠くチーム——に対して最も戦術的に有効だ。こうした相手に対してベースラインからドライブすることは、サーバーが前進する必要なくエラーを生み出せる。しかし、規律あるキッチンラインチームに対しては、ベースラインプレーは負ける戦略になる。角度と高さの不利があまりに深刻で、グラウンドストロークだけでは克服できないからだ。
サーブのリターンは、ピックルボールにおいて唯一義務づけられたベースラインショットだ——すべてのポイントは、リターナーがベースラインかその近くにいる状態から始まる。リターンの質が、リターナーがどれだけ速く前進できるかを決める。深く、コントロールされたリターンは、リターナーに前進する時間を与える。短い、あるいは弱いリターンは即座に攻撃され、リターナーは後方にとどまることを強いられる。リターンを、単にボールをプレーに入れるだけのものとしてではなく、最初の戦術的判断として扱うことが、ベースラインプレーを制約から土台へと進化させる方法だ。
Even if you prefer to drive from the back court, plan to advance after every shot that forces your opponent to defend. This means staying back is a tactic, not a permanent position.
From the baseline, vary your drive targets between the feet of the advancing opponent, the deep backhand corner, and down the middle. This means predictable baseline driving is easily shut down at the kitchen line.

How it shows up on video

Common mistakes
- Choosing baseline play as a default strategy rather than advancing to the kitchen, limiting offensive potential
- Driving flat and predictably from the baseline, giving the kitchen team time to settle and attack from above
- Failing to advance after a successful drive that forced the opponent to retreat from the kitchen line
- Staying at the baseline even when the opponent has left the kitchen, missing an opportunity to advance unchallenged
