ナックルボール(ファストピッチ)

ファストピッチのナックルボールは、最小限のスピンで投げられ、空気の乱流によってボールが不規則にふらつく。打者にとっても捕手にとってもほぼ予測不可能になる。
この投球は、回転を抑えるために手首を固定した状態で、指先かナックルからリリースされる。スピンがないため、ボールは縫い目の向きと空気圧に左右され、飛行の途中で変化する予測不可能な横方向・縦方向の動きを生む。ファストピッチでは珍しい武器だが、コントロールされれば効果的だ。どれだけ事前に偵察しても、その軌道を読み取ることはできないからだ。
Practice the grip and wrist stillness at close range first — throw to a partner at 20 feet to feel the flutter before adding velocity.
Sequence the knuckleball after a rise ball or drop ball so hitters who have adjusted to spin-based movement are completely disoriented by the spinless flutter.

How it shows up on video
The release will show rigid wrist with fingertips pushing the ball rather than snapping through it. The seams will appear to tumble erratically rather than rotating in a clean axis. Catcher body language tells the story — they widen their stance and lower their center of gravity to block rather than receive. The ball's path will show multiple direction changes between the pitcher and plate.
Common mistakes
- Inadvertently adding wrist snap that introduces spin and kills the flutter effect
- Releasing too far from the body or at an uneven height, causing the ball to float too high or spike too low
- Overusing it as a novelty without practicing blocking with the catcher, leading to passed balls
- Hitters chasing it out of the zone because its trajectory is so hard to predict early in flight
