出塁率 = (安打 + 四球 + 死球) / (打数 + 四球 + 死球 + 犠牲フライ)。40%の確率で出塁する打者は、四球ゼロで打率.400を残していても、その同じ40打席のうち25回アウトになる打者よりも、ラリーオフェンスにとってはるかに価値があります。上位打線のスローピッチ打者は出塁率を優先すべきであり、中軸のパワーヒッターは打点や長打率でより判断されます。フォーマルな統計を追跡しないレクリエーションのスローピッチでは、シーズンを通して打席あたりの出塁回数を単純に集計することで出塁率を見積もることができます。
Think of each at-bat as an opportunity to reach base — a walk, a single, and a hit by pitch all count the same in OBP. Avoid giving easy outs on pitches clearly outside the zone.
In slow-pitch, OBP is a better predictor of run production than batting average because the high-arc delivery creates more walk opportunities. Track your OBP separately and set a goal of .500+ in competitive leagues.

- Focusing only on batting average or home runs and ignoring how often you make outs unnecessarily by swinging at bad pitches
- Swinging at the first pitch even when it's outside the strike zone — giving the pitcher a free early out
- Not counting walks as a success — a walk in slow-pitch moves runners and preserves the inning exactly as a single does
- Treating every plate appearance as an opportunity to drive the ball rather than recognizing when getting on base by any means is the team's priority
