Also known as: 슬라이드 피스, 슬러브

Definition

Beginner tip

Start with a firm middle-finger grip on the inner third of the ball and focus on keeping your arm action identical to your fastball. This means let the off-center pressure create the break rather than manipulating your wrist.

Advanced note

Develop a second slider shape by varying the degree of tilt in your grip. This means more tilt toward the curveball produces a slurvy shape. Less tilt and more middle-finger pressure produces a tighter, later-breaking slider that hitters see as a fastball for longer.

Example

How it shows up on video

On video, a good slider should be visually indistinguishable from a fastball through the first 20 feet of flight. Only the late snap of lateral break separates it. Common errors visible on camera include a supination of the wrist before release that reveals the pitch, a tilted elbow that shifts the spin axis and turns the slider into a flat pitch with no late movement. An uneven grip that produces varying amounts of gyroscopic versus true side-spin.

Common mistakes

  • Visibly supinating (turning the hand outward) before release, which telegraphs the slider to hitters who are watching the wrist and hand
  • Throwing the slider with a stiff wrist that reduces spin rate and converts the late snap into a gradual, easy-to-read curve
  • Over-using the slider against same-handed hitters until they identify the pattern and begin sitting on the pitch in two-strike counts
  • Throwing the slider too far out of the strike zone as the primary two-strike offering. This allows patient hitters to take it for a ball and work the count

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage Motion Lab tracks wrist orientation through the release zone and compares it across fastball and slider reps to detect premature supination that tips the pitch. Lateral break and depth data from rep-by-rep analysis help calibrate whether the slider is maintaining true late movement or developing into a predictable gradual curve.
