To eliminate the most common club selection error, commit to this rule for one month. This means always take one more club than you think you need for approach shots. If you think it's a 7-iron, hit the 6-iron instead. Track how many shots land pin-high or beyond versus short — most recreational golfers discover they were reliably under-clubbing.
Build a personal distance chart with your realistic average carry (not best carry) for every club, measured with a launch monitor or GPS tracking over many shots on a calm day. Laminate this card and keep it in your bag. Using actual average carry distances for every club selection decision is one of the highest-leverage no-swing-change improvements available.

How it shows up on video
Club selection is not directly observable in swing video. But the consequences of misselection are. This means shots that reliably come up short of the green despite good contact suggest systematic under-clubbing. Shots that land in awkward positions despite good execution suggest poor situational analysis. Video of on-course play with GPS distance data provides the clearest context for analyzing club selection quality.
Common mistakes
- Using best-case distance instead of average distance for club selection — the most costly club selection error. Always use the distance you hit the club on a normal, solid shot, not your best-ever shot with that club.
- Not adjusting for wind, temperature, and altitude. This means wind changes carry distance by a lot (a 20 mph headwind can cost 15–20 yards on a 7-iron). Not adjusting for playing conditions produces reliably miscalculated distances.
- Always using the same club from a given yardage regardless of shot shape required. This means a 150-yard shot to a back-left pin with right-to-left wind may require a different club than a 150-yard shot to a front-right pin with no wind. Situational variables change the effective required carry.
- Letting ego influence club selection ("I can hit it there with this club") — club selection should be based on realistic capability, not aspirational capability. The ego-driven shot that requires a perfect strike to succeed is a lower expected-value choice than the conservative shot that succeeds on average contact.
