토탈 디스턴스

토탈 디스턴스는 공이 맞은 순간부터 멈출 때까지 이동하는 거리다 — 공중을 나는 캐리 거리와 착지 후 구르는 거리를 더한 것이다.
골프에서 토탈 디스턴스는 임팩트부터 최종 정지 위치까지 공이 이동하는 전체 거리를 말한다 — 캐리 거리(공중으로 얼마나 날아가는지)와 롤 거리(착지 후 얼마나 튀고 구르는지)의 합이다. 캐리와 토탈 디스턴스의 구분을 이해하는 것은 코스 플래닝에 결정적인데, 그 비율이 지면 조건, 궤적, 스핀율, 하강 각도에 따라 극적으로 달라지기 때문이다. 단단하고 빠른 링크스 코스에서는 150야드 캐리가 총 180야드 이상이 될 수 있다. 부드럽고 젖은 파크랜드 코스에서는 같은 150야드 캐리가 총 155야드밖에 안 될 수 있다. 단단한 코스에서 캐리 거리만 사용하면 일관되게 그린을 지나쳐 굴러가는 샷이 만들어지고, 부드러운 코스에서 토탈 디스턴스를 사용하면 일관되게 짧게 떨어지는 샷이 만들어진다.
롤아웃에 영향을 미치는 주요 변수는: 하강 각도(더 가파른 착지 각도는 롤을 줄이고, 더 완만한 각도는 롤을 늘린다), 스핀율(더 높은 스핀은 착지 시 더 많은 멈추는 힘을 만든다), 지면 단단함(단단한 지면은 부드러운 지면보다 더 많은 롤을 만든다), 착지 시 바람 방향(순풍은 공의 전진 모멘텀을 유지시키고 맞바람은 하강 각도를 증가시킨다)이다. 이러한 변수들을 이해하는 골퍼는 대부분의 조건에서 토탈 디스턴스를 신뢰성 있게 예측할 수 있다. 모든 조건에 캐리 수치만 사용하는 골퍼는 서로 다른 코스와 날씨 유형에서 비일관적인 결과를 얻을 것이다.
드라이빙에서는 토탈 디스턴스(캐리+롤)가 골퍼 간 거리를 비교하는 데 사용되는 지표인데, 단단한 페어웨이에서 완만한 하강 각도로 낮은 스핀을 가진 드라이브는 부드러운 지면에 가파르게 착지하는 높은 스핀의 드라이브보다 캐리 거리가 동일해도 상당히 더 굴러갈 수 있기 때문이다. PGA 투어 통계는 총 드라이빙 거리를 보고하며, 이것이 같은 스윙 산출물이 코스와 시즌에 따라 그렇게 크게 달라지는 이유다.
For approach shots to greens: always use carry yardage as your primary club selection input, not total distance. Most greens are surrounded by hazards at the front, and the carry distance to clear the front is the critical variable. Overshoot the carry and you land on the green; undershoot it and you land in a bunker or rough.
Track your personal carry-to-total ratio by club and condition. This means on a typical course, note the carry yardage (from GPS at apex estimation) and the final resting point for each of your irons and driver over several rounds. The average carry-to-total ratio per club gives you condition-specific adjustment factors. This means for example, if your 7-iron averages 6 yards of roll on normal conditions, you know to expect 10 yards of roll on a firm day and 2 yards on a wet day.

How it shows up on video
Total distance is measured from impact to final resting position and is therefore only quantifiable with distance-measurement tools (GPS, laser, launch monitor). Video can provide context by showing trajectory traits that indicate whether the ball is likely to roll by a lot after landing (shallow angle, low spin) or stop quickly (steep angle, high spin). But definitive total distance requires measurement.
Common mistakes
- Using carry distance for total distance calculations on firm, fast courses. This means on links courses or in summer when fairways are firm, the roll contribution can add 15–30 yards to the carry distance for driver shots. Using only carry distance for club selection on these courses produces consistent short misses.
- Using total distance figures from one course to plan shots on a very different course. This means total distance numbers from a wet parkland course do not apply to a firm links course. Always calibrate distance expectations to the current conditions.
- Ignoring the roll contribution in approach shots to elevated or downsloped greens. This means approach shots that land on the front of an elevated, firm green and roll to the back may carry only 140 yards but total 160 yards to the final resting spot. Back-pin locations on elevated, fast greens require shorter club selection than the carry yardage suggests.
- Not differentiating between individual balls' total distances due to spin differences — two balls with identical carries but different spin rates produce different total distances. Understanding that your personal equipment and swing produce a specific carry-to-total relationship is more useful than generic industry averages.
