Diepte in het buitenveld

Also known as: outfield-positionering, diep spelen, ondiep spelen

Definition

Beginner tip

Read the batter's stance and the inning before positioning. This means play shallower in early innings with no score pressure, deeper when protecting a lead late in the game.

Advanced note

In slow-pitch, most balls are hit in the air due to the high arc. Playing deeper than standard depth is often correct unless the batter frequently puts the ball on the ground.

Example

How it shows up on video

Outfield depth positioning is visible from overhead or side-angle video as outfielders playing shallow (near the infield grass edge), standard depth, or deep (near the fence). Playing in trades line-drive singles for preventing base hits from dropping in front; playing deep prevents extra-base hits but allows shorter fly balls to fall.

Common mistakes

  • Playing the outfield at the same depth for every batter without considering the arc's effect on ball carry distance
  • Failing to shade left or right based on the batter's pull tendency, allowing routine fly balls to become extra-base hits
  • Not communicating outfield alignment with infield positioning — gaps need to be covered by the correct combination of depths
  • Standing flat-footed at depth rather than staying on the balls of the feet in a ready stance
