Bump-and-run
To practice the bump-and-run, go to the edge of the putting green with a 7-iron and chip balls from off the green toward a distant hole. This means the low trajectory and long roll will feel unfamiliar at first. But after a few sessions you will develop a feel for how far the ball runs from different distances.
Develop "green speed feel" for bump-and-run calibration. This means before your first bump-and-run on a new course, chip a few practice balls from off the green toward the rough (away from the hole) at a moderate speed and watch how far they roll on the actual green surface. This 2-minute calibration gives you a feel for the day's conditions that makes your first bump-and-run far more likely to be correctly paced.
Example
How it shows up on video
From a face-on camera angle, the bump-and-run looks like a compact chip shot. This means forward shaft lean, minimal wrist action. A short-to-medium follow-through for the distance being played. The ball visibly stays low after contact, bouncing into the fairway or fringe before rolling onto the green. From a down-the-line angle, the setup shows the ball positioned back in the stance and the hands slightly ahead of the ball at address. This means both visible setup indicators of the bump-and-run intent. The trajectory is distinctively lower than a pitch or flop shot.
Common mistakes
- Attempting a bump-and-run through rough or over hazards — the shot requires clear, relatively flat terrain between the ball and the hole. If there is rough, a bunker, or severe slope to carry, the bump-and-run is the wrong choice; a higher lofted shot is required.
- Using too much loft and calling it a bump-and-run. This means hitting a short pitch that lands on the fringe and rolls a bit is not a bump-and-run. The distinction is club selection (mid-iron) and the deliberate low trajectory that runs most of the total distance.
- Not accounting for the running distance correctly — the bump-and-run lands close to the ball and rolls most of the distance. Many golfers underestimate how far the ball will run and land it too far onto the green, producing long putts.
- Abandoning the bump-and-run in favor of always pitching. This means the bump-and-run has a higher success rate than a pitch for many situations. This is because the running phase on the green is more predictable than the airborne phase. Keeping it in your shot selection rotation improves consistency.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage evaluates bump-and-run execution from face-on video using the same compact chip stroke analysis framework — shaft lean, wrist action, and follow-through proportionality. The low launch trajectory visible in the video confirms the low-loft club and forward shaft lean that produce the running shot. Confidence labels reflect video quality and camera positioning.
