Shank

Also known as: socket, hosel rocket

Definition

Beginner tip

If you shanked a shot, the fastest reset is. This means step back from the ball by half an inch, make sure your weight is on the balls of your feet (not your toes), and make a smooth three-quarter swing focusing only on the sweet spot of the face. Removing the lunge by standing slightly further back resolves the most common shank cause immediately.

Advanced note

To diagnose your specific shank cause, place a head cover just outside the ball (on the hosel side). This means if you shank into the head cover, the path is coming too far out and the fix is a more in-to-out path or more distance from the ball. If you miss the head cover but still shank, the cause is a late-impact balance shift onto the toes. The fix is maintaining heel contact through impact.

Example

How it shows up on video

A shank is unmistakably visible from any camera angle. This is because the ball launches hard to the right at a steep angle rather than traveling toward the target. In slow motion from a face-on angle, the hosel contact is visible — the ball makes contact outside the face, near or on the hosel. The body movement that typically precedes a shank is also visible from face-on. This means an early extension or forward lunge that moves the entire swing arc toward the ball, or the hands moving away from the body through the impact zone.

Common mistakes

  • Focusing consciously on "not hitting the hosel" — directing attention to the avoided action typically produces that action. Focus instead on where you want to hit the ball (the center of the face or even the toe) rather than what you are trying to avoid.
  • Checking only one cause when shanks appear. This means shanks can come from standing too close, early extension, excessive out-to-in path, or a swing that bottoms out in the wrong location. Determining which cause is active requires observation or video, not guessing.
  • Over-correcting the shank by standing further from the ball — this is a valid adjustment for a "setup-too-close" shank but makes other shank causes worse. If the shank comes from early extension rather than being too close, standing further from the ball does not solve it.
  • Abandoning the round after a shank — shanks are more recoverable than their psychological impact suggests. Taking a deep breath, resetting to a at its core sound address, and making a deliberate three-quarter swing often breaks the cluster immediately.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage can identify shank-producing movement patterns from face-on video — in particular the early extension or forward lunge that moves the swing arc toward the ball. While the hosel contact itself is most clearly visible in high-speed video, the body-position patterns that produce shanks are observable in standard video. The system can flag early extension as a shank-risk factor with appropriate confidence labeling.
