Identify the one pitch height and side combination that you hit hardest in batting practice. This means middle-in, belt-high is most common. This means and commit to looking for only that pitch in 0-0 and 1-0 counts. At the same time, taking everything else for at least five games to see how pitchers respond.
Map your zone-hitting discipline by pitch type as well as location. This means some hitters have damage zones that are pitch-type-specific (a fastball middle-in is a damage zone. A curveball middle-in is not) and the most sophisticated zone-hitting approaches account for pitch type preference within the location preference.
Example
How it shows up on video
On video, zone-hitting discipline is visible in the quality of contact outcomes across different pitch locations. This means a hitter with good zone discipline produces hard contact in their preferred zone and weak contact or takes when pitches arrive outside it. Common errors include swinging at pitches by a lot outside the preferred zone on early-count opportunities (expanding too early), taking pitches in the middle of the strike zone. This is because they are not in the preferred location (overly rigid zone that sacrifices high-quality pitches), and taking too-full swings on two-strike counts outside the zone rather than a protective contact swing.
Common mistakes
- Defining the zone too narrowly as a rigid location rather than a quality threshold. This means zone hitting should be about pitch quality (location plus trajectory) rather than a fixed box that the hitter hunts mechanically
- Failing to adjust the zone size appropriately for the count, maintaining a two-zone approach on a 1-2 count when the situation demands a much wider zone-protection swing
- Hunting a specific location without tracking pitch type. This leads to zone-hitting a curveball that starts in the preferred location before breaking out of it. This means resulting in the worst of both worlds. This means a swing and a miss on an out-of-zone pitch
- Using zone hitting as a passive strategy where the hitter simply takes pitches rather than an aggressive strategy where the hitter is looking to destroy the damage-zone pitch when it arrives
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage builds a contact-quality map for each hitter across all pitch locations in the zone and identifies the specific zone regions where exit velocity and launch angle are above the session baseline. This is the data-defined damage zone that the zone-hitting approach should target. Hitters receive advice for which quadrant of the zone to hunt based on their individual contact profile.
