Draw a physical strike zone on a backstop or wall at home during practice and aim your pitch or swing decision practice at the four corners. This means edge awareness built in practice translates directly to game situations.
Study your location heat map across a season and identify the quadrant where your command rate is lowest. This means targeted dry-run practice aimed at that specific corner of the zone will produce faster command improvement than general bullpen work.
Example
Why it matters
How it shows up on video
On video, zone location is evaluated by comparing the pitch's final position relative to home plate width and height references established by the batter's stance. Common errors visible on camera include pitches that reliably miss the same edge of the zone (a command pattern problem), pitches that start on the edges and drift into the middle of the zone (movement uneven results). Hitters who swing at pitches that are visually outside the strike zone frame before crossing the plate. This means indicating a recognition problem rather than a mechanics issue.
Common mistakes
- Pitchers aiming for the middle of the zone as a safety mechanism when behind in the count, turning command problems into hitter-friendly meatballs
- Hitters expanding the strike zone in two-strike counts. As a result, far that they are protecting balls six inches off the plate. This means giving away the zone entirely to pitchers who recognise the pattern
- Pitchers confusing the high strike with the high ball. This means the top of the official zone is at the midpoint of the torso. This is several inches above where most pitchers aim when trying to "go up in the zone"
- Both pitchers and hitters misjudging the practical low-strike boundary and either not attacking it (pitchers) or swinging at pitches two inches below the zone (hitters) based on incorrect mental zone maps
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage maps every pitch location on a heat grid relative to the standard strike zone and overlays the results across sessions to identify location patterns, quadrant tendencies, and zone-edge command rates. For hitters, the system tracks which zone locations produce different contact outcomes to identify the individual damage zone within the strike zone.
