预摆(Waggle)

Definition

Beginner tip

Develop a simple two-waggle routine. This means after completing your address setup, move the clubhead back along your takeaway path two times (small, relaxed movements), then let the third movement become your actual swing. Two wags, one swing — this simple formula builds a consistent waggle-to-swing connection.

Advanced note

Use your waggle to program a specific feel you want to maintain in the takeaway. This means for example, if you are working on a wider takeaway, use the waggle to feel the clubhead staying wide of your hands in the first foot of the movement. The waggle is free rehearsal time — make it specific to whatever takeaway quality you are currently focused on improving.

Example

How it shows up on video

From a face-on camera angle, the waggle is visible as a small, rhythmic movement of the clubhead before the swing begins. This means the hands and club making rehearsal movements over the ball. At the same time, the body remains in its address position. A backswing-preview waggle shows the clubhead moving back along the intended takeaway path. From a down-the-line angle, the waggle can reveal the takeaway path being rehearsed. This means whether the club is tracking along the correct plane or drifting inside or outside even in the practice movement.

Common mistakes

  • No waggle (freezing over the ball). This means standing completely still over the ball allows tension to build and turns the swing initiation into a "from zero" movement that requires more conscious effort and produces more variability.
  • Waggling inconsistently — a different waggle each shot removes the rhythm-programming benefit. The waggle should be practiced until it is as habitual as the grip.
  • Waggling. As a result, long that it becomes a stalling mechanism. This means some golfers with "yips" or pre-shot anxiety develop an extended waggling habit that delays the swing indefinitely. A waggle should be a fixed number of repetitions (2–4 is typical) with a consistent trigger for when to start the actual swing.
  • Waggling in a direction uneven with the intended takeaway — if the waggle rehearses a different path than the actual takeaway, it is providing incorrect programming. The waggle should mirror the actual first foot of the takeaway.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage observes the waggle pattern from video as part of the pre-shot routine analysis. This means in particular whether a waggle is present, whether it is consistent, and whether the movement being rehearsed matches the actual takeaway path. The system notes the waggle as a positive pre-shot routine element when present and consistent.
